Vieuxtemps - Violin Concerto No. 5
Mayuko Kamio, violin (U.S. debut)
Shostakovich - Symphony No. 4

Sparkling French Romanticism abounds in Vieuxtemps' endearing Violin Concerto No. 5, with the astonishing virtuosity of fourteen year old prodigy Mayuko Kamio. Profound and deeply personal, the gargantuan 4th Symphony of Shostakovich evokes the composer's hero, Gustav Mahler, in this epic work. Emotionally bracing, the symphony is a kaleidoscope of human feelings conveyed through music. Fear of reprisals from Stalin kept it under wraps for 30 some years before its 1961 premiere.
